Chronic Cough

What are the symptoms?
  • Tickle in the throat
  • Coughing fits leading to vomiting
  • Post-nasal drainage
  • Coughing that wake you up from sleep
What’s going on behind the scenes?
Sub-acute (more than 4 weeks) and chronic (more than 8 weeks) coughing can be very disruptive. This can be a challenging diagnosis for all physicians. For the ENT physician, we focus on factors that affect the throat and airways. Possible causes include nasal drainage, polyps, asthma, nasal allergies, reflux/heartburn, overactive nerves in the throat. Sometimes, a chronic cough can result from irritation of the nerves in the throat caused by a bacterial or viral infection.
How Tucson ENT can help
Diagnosis can be made with a thorough examination and a detailed history. We can help determine the cause of your cough through endoscopic examination of the nose and throat, allergy and lung function testing, and CT scans and other diagnostic imaging. A trial of effective medications are recommended for the above possible causes.
