What’s going on behind the scenes?
There are some normal masses that can be commonly felt in the neck. The submandibular gland can be found on both sides just under the jawline. The carotid bulb becomes more noticeable as one ages because it calcifies. The carotid bulb is unique in character because of its pulsations. Thyroid growths can be felt in the front of the neck. Lastly, many lymph nodes are sprinkled throughout the neck. These are filters for our immune system. They will enlarge during colds or other illnesses. Usually they regress in about 2 weeks.
